To my fellow UCP members:
My name is Max DeGroat. I am standing for the position of UCP Treasurer at this year’s AGM, and am extremely grateful to you for taking the time to look at this biography.
I’m a lawyer, with a corporate practice and a securities background. I was born and raised in Calgary, and am a graduate of Henry Wise Wood High School, the University of Toronto, and the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. I worked to pay my way through university as an Alberta Registries Agent, and saved to pay for law school while working as a research analyst with Wood’s Homes, a children’s mental health centre with facilities across Alberta. While in law school I summered with a boutique securities firm on Bay Street, but I wished to complete my articles in Alberta, and ultimately did so with a rural general practice in Taber. I am currently the Director of Policy Development at the non-profit Sustaining Alberta’s Energy Network and a Research Associate with the Frontier Centre for Public Policy.
I have served on two Wildrose C.A. boards and four UCP boards, and am currently VP of Policy for both Calgary-Currie and Calgary-West. I am also a current member of the UCP Party Policy and Governance Committee, and a Sponsor of the grassroots C.A. Collaborative Group that worked to assemble this year’s Governance proposals.
I have volunteered on over a dozen successful nomination, byelection, provincial, and federal election campaigns for Wildrose, UCP, and CPC candidates. In the 2019 election I had the honour of serving as Campaign Manager for Nicholas Milliken, who is now the UCP MLA for Calgary-Currie and the Deputy Chair of Committees in the Alberta Legislature.
I have the skills and financial background necessary to successfully take on the role of UCP Treasurer. And in every role I have taken on I have also remained a consistent champion of small government, grassroots democracy, religious freedom, Western Canadian interests, and fiscal responsibility. I am running a grassroots campaign to help ensure that the UCP lives up to its promise as a party of the grassroots.
I would be honoured to have your support, and hope very much that you will consider voting for me to be your new UCP Treasurer on October 16th and 17th.
